  • Our sightseeing this morning takes in the sumptuous majesty of Durbar Square, with its collection of ornate palaces, courtyards and temples that span some three centuries of dynastic rule by Malla, Shah and Rana kings. We’ll see the Great Bell and the fearsome image of the six-armed Kala Bhairab, the magnificent Taleju Temple and the Kasthamandap, the oldest building in the Kathmandu Valley. We will also visit the Asan Bazaar and the Kumari Ghar, home to the Kumari Devi, a living goddess worshipped by both followers of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths.
  • This afternoon we will then have an opportunity to visit a local hire shop to pick up any last minute equipment still needed.
  • Overnight at the hotel
  • Meals included: Breakfast

Fly to Lukla (2840m) and trek to Phakding (2610m)

  • Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding – About 3 hrs walking
  • Transferring to the domestic airport this morning we take the short 40 minute flight to Lukla, hopefully enjoying the spectacular views of Gauri Shankar (7415m), Melungtse (7181m) and Numbur (6955m) en route.
  • Please be aware that adverse weather conditions and other local factors can cause delays and even cancellations to this flight and, although seats are booked and confirmed well in advance, it may be necessary to adjust the itinerary accordingly. Arriving in Lukla we will meet by our Sherpa guides and crew and begin the descent down towards the village of Choplung (2697m). We then head north, following the east bank of the Dudh Kosi to Ghat (2545m), before crossing the river to our final destination for the day in Phakding (2610m).
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m)

  • After breakfast we depart Phakding and continue along the western bank of the river, following a fairly level trail that leads into the Sagarmatha National Park at Jorsale. The journey takes us through a landscape of pine and rhododendron forest, crossing the Dudh Kosi on a couple of occasions and ascending to the village of Chomoa. After lunch we then begin the long ascent up to Namche Bazaar, a fairly strenuous 666 metre climb that should afford us our first views of Everest and Lhotse, as we follow a meandering trail that leads through more pine forest up to the horseshoe-shaped bowl that contains the Sherpa village of Namche (3440m).
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Situated high above the Bhote Kosi Gorge, Namche is the centre of Sherpa life in the Upper Khumbu and its bustling market and steep, narrow streets provide plenty of colour and interest. We have an extra day here to help acclimatize to the altitude, which affords an ideal opportunity to visit the National Park headquarters, as well as the nearby Sherpa Museum. There are some spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Everest, Nupse and Lhotse from here and this afternoon there is a chance to enjoy an optional hike along the Bhote Kosi Valley towards Phurte (3500m). A walk of some 2 hours, it involves a steep climb initially, but this does present some superb views across the surrounding landscapes to the mountains beyond. Alternatively you might just like to enjoy the atmosphere of Namche itself, doing a little shopping amongst its myriad of tiny stalls, or watching the bustling chaos of street life as yaks, trekkers and Sherpas vie for space amongst its narrow lanes.

  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Namche Phortse Tenga –About 6 hrs walking
  • After breakfast, we trek to the villages of Khumjung set below Khumbila, the rocky peak sacred to all Sherpas. In Khumjung we can see the Edmund Hillary School. There should also be time to visit Khumjung monastery, where for a small donation we will be shown the only Yeti skull in the world! Descending to the main trail and meet the main trail to Gokyo then we climb approx 1 ½ hrs to reach the pass called Mong La marked by a chorten on the top of a ridge at 3972m.and we decent all the way to Phorste Tenga for overnight.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Phorste Tenga to Dole-About 3 hrs walking
  • From Phortse Tenga the trail starts to climb steeply out of the valley and we enter the rhododendron forests, which give way to juniper and conifers higher up the valley. We pass through many kharkas, summer settlements used by the Sherpas to graze their yaks, before coming to Dole where we have magnificent views of Cholatshe and Tawoche.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Dole to Machhermo– About 3 hrs walking
  • Today is a short walk for us. From Dole the trail is steep in places as it passes through Lhabarma and Luza along the side of the valley, high above the river through scrub junipers until we cross the dusty trail to Machhermo (4410m). It was here in 1974 that a yeti was reported to have attacked a sherpa and killed three yaks! We should get to Machhermo by lunch time and in the afternoon there is time for an acclimatization walk up onto the ridge behind the lodge for amazing views of Thamserku.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo–About 3½ hrs walking
  • Today, we climb through a ridge Chorten from where we can see fabulous view of both down the valley and of the Mt. Kangtega, Thamserku, and northern part to the Cho-Oyu (8203m). Beyond the ridge the valley widens as the trail passes through a Chorten and reaches Pangka (4480 m) after some gentle walk. Phangka is the place where an avalanche in 1995 killed 40 people. We descend to the river bank before beginning to climb up to the terminal moraine of the Ngozamba Glacier. It is a steep climb on the moraine. After crossing an iron bridge over an stream the trial levels out as it follows the valley past the first lake, known as Longpongo at 4690m, where we get chance to observe the Lama footprints on a stone. At the sight of the second lake, Taboche Tsho we become mesmerized by the shimmering turquoise blue sheet of water sparkling in the sun. Little ahead of the second lake, we reach the third lake, the two linked by a surging stream. Gokyo village stands by the third lake and Cho-Oyu Mountain as a backdrop sets an amazing spectacular sight here. After lunch, we explore around the third Lakes, Dudh Pokhari. We spend night in a teahouse at Gokyo.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

<strong– tangnak=”” (4700m)<=”” strong=””></strong–>

  • Trek to Gokyo Ri and backtrack to Tangnak–About 7 hrs walking
  • An early start this morning for the ascent of Gokyo Ri (5483m), a small peak above Gokyo village. As we climb the views become even more fantastic and from the top we can see four of the eight highest peaks in the Nepal Himalaya: Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Stretching out for miles below us is the longest glacier in Nepal – the Ngozumpo glacier, which tumbles down from the slopes of Cho Oyu. One of the best all round views in Nepal, the climb is well worth the effort. We return to Gokyo for lunch. Mid afternoon we retrace our steps to the second lake and climb to the crest of the moraine overlooking the Ngozumpo glacier. The route across the glacier is well marked with cairns and takes us to the eastern side of the Gokyo Valley. We stay tonight at Tangnak (4700m) at the foot of the Cho La Pass.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Trek to Dzongla, Cross the Cho La–About 5 hrs walking
  • An early start for the long day across the Cho La (5330m). We climb up from Tangnak and approach a large boulder field. Beyond this ancient moraine, the climb to the pass is steep in places, involving some easy scrambling. The upper part of the route can be snow covered, particularly after November. From the pass there are excellent views including an unusual aspect of Ama Dablam. The descent from the pass involves the crossing of a small glacier (usually snow covered) which is fairly straightforward. We descend steeply to the grazing pastures below, the trail becoming more defined as we approach Dzongla (4830m), where we stay tonight in a very small basic lodge.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche- About 4-5 hrs walking)
  • Leaving Dzongla we continue our descent on an easy trail. A short ascent brings us to the foot of Awi Peak, which we contour round on a wonderful high trail with great views of Chalotse and Tawoche across the valley. We finally descend to join the main trail again just below Lobuje. We spend the night at Lobuche (4,930m). The sunset on Nuptse from the ridge across from the lodge is not to be missed.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Lobuche to Gorakshep; day trip to Everest Base Camp – About 8 hrs walking)
  • We are now surrounded by giant Himalayan peaks; Everest, Nuptse, Lingtren, Khumbutse and Pumori tower above us. Today is very long and hard as we visit Everest Base Camp. The trail from Lobuje climbs steadily by the side of the Khumbu Glacier, and after crossing glacier rubble we arrive at Gorakshep (5160m), a summer yak-herder settlement siuated at the foot of Kala Pattar. After a short break and snack we set off for Base Camp. The trail heads along the crest of the moraine at first and then drops onto the Khumbu Glacier itself, where we get magnificent close-up views of the great Khumbu Icefall as it tumbles down from Everest. In the spring season we will see expedition teams as they prepare for an ascent. We retrace our steps to Gorakshep for the night.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Kala Patthar and Pheriche – About 9 hrs walking
  • Another long day as we ascend the small peak of Kala Pattar (‘black rock’) at 5545 m. It is a steep two-hour climb to the summit, but the effort is well worth it, as we appreciate the most magnificent view of the Khumbu glacier and above all a close-up sight of the world’s highest mountain which the Nepalese call Sagarmatha – Fore Head of Sky and the Sherpas Chomolungma – Mother of the World. We return to Gorakshep and descend past Lobuche to Pheriche. Please note the exact order in which we trek up Kala Pattar and visit Everest Base Camp will depend on the weather and how the group is acclimatizing. Both days are long and hard due to the high altitude.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge (teahouse)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Pheriche to Tengboche-About 5 hrs walking
  • After the previous day’s tiring ascent to Kala Patthar, today is an easier walk down to the lower altitudes to Orsho and Shomare. If we wish to visit the Gompa in Upper Pangboche we can do so by taking a different trail after Shomare. Otherwise we take the regular trial to reach Pangboche. From Pangboche we retrace our footsteps down to the Imja Khola and up through the forest to Debuche or if interested, we might visit nuns at the Debuche monastery. Finally, we reach Tengboche. If we are trekking during the full moon of November or December, we might get an opportunity to witness the Mani Rimdu festival in the monastery at Tengboche.
  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Trek from Tengboche to Monjo – About 7 hrs walking
  • We will trek down through the hillside blanketed by rhododendron and juniper trees. If it’s spring, pink and red rhododendron flowers ablaze our surroundings. After crossing the prayer flag festooned bridge over the Dudkoshi River, we reach Phunki Thenga. The trail then follows the Dud Koshi gorge ascending rapidly through the pine forests. The path eventually reaches Sansa which is the major trail junction in the region. We stop at Kyangjuma (3600m) for a relaxed lunch. We unknowingly appreciate the gorgeous Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Nuptse with every bite. Following lunch, the trail to Namche Bazaar clings to the gentle slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. We keep a lookout for wild life such as mountain goats, colorful pheasants, etc., while we pass through the forest by the trail. After passing a Chorten, we reach the army camp at of Namche Bazaar. We want to take a long last look (and picture!) back to Lhotse, the tip of Everest and Tengboche from here. Following a steep descent passing the Bhote Kosi, crossing the river, follow the bank to Jorsale, then to Monjo for overnight.
  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Monjo to Lukla (2840m)
  • Trek from Monjo to Lukla– About 5-6 hrs walking
  • Retracing our steps along the east bank of the Dudh Kosi we make our final ascent down to Lukla, arriving sometime in the middle of the afternoon, affording ample time to relax and enjoy the feeling of a job well done. Lukla itself is a thriving community that is an eclectic mix of Sherpas, trekkers and soldiers and makes for a fascinating place to explore at the end of the trek.
  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Natraj Trekking has built in additional days to the itinerary to accommodate this. However, very rarely persistent adverse weather could mean that the start of your trek or your return to Kathmandu is delayed. If you are not interested in the alternative trip and would rather wait for the trip, you are welcome to wait in Kathmandu for as many days as it takes to get a flight to Lukla. However, please note that there will be no refund, if you lose your time waiting at the airport and do not take an alternative tour or you only do short trek later due to time limitation. If the cancellation happens before the trip, we will provide you accommodation and lunch in a guesthouse in Kathmandu. The afternoon’s walk is generally shorter and we usually arrive at our destination in time for afternoon tea. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent exploring the village, doing a bit of washing or simply relaxing with a good book. On some days we will arrive at our destination by lunchtime and the entire afternoon will be free. After dinner, the evening will often be spent playing cards and reliving the day’s adventures, before heading off to bed for a well-earned sleep.

You need to pass on your International flight details to us for a ‘meeting and greeting’ service at the Kathmandu Airport. You just pass through the Customs and come out of the Arrival Terminal Hall after collecting your baggage where you will see our representative /guide standing with a placard that states Natraj Trekking’ with your own name.

Autumn (mid Sept to mid Dec) and Spring (March to May) are the best seasons for the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. The weather is sunny and warm offering outstanding views but the nights are cold and can fall to freezing in higher elevations. Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) is also good for EBC trek, only issue is cold (obviously). Trekking in summer/monsoon (June, July) will be affected by rain but summer trek could be a boon for a keen botanist. The trekking routes are crowded during spring and autumn but during monsoon and winter the routes are not packed and you could enjoy rather best of nature.

Sherpas live in the upper regions of Solu Khumbu. They emigrated from Tibet about 600 years ago. The Khumbu region has provided a strong group of able bodied, hardy and fearless Sherpa porters and guides. Sherpas practice Tibetan Buddhism which is also known as Lama Buddhism.

Depending on the prevailing situation, itinerary can be modified to some extent after consulting with your trek guide. However, the date of trek completion should always coincide with the original itinerary. You should keep in mind that this is an adventure trip into the remotest region, where many unforeseen events may contribute to the need for a change in itinerary. In such cases, we or your guide will suggest the best alternative similar to your original.

We ensure that all porters and all other staff climbing in high altitude conditions are provided with adequate clothing and equipment. We ensure that the porters we hire are insured. We run the trek according to the guidelines of the International Porter Protection group (IPPG- www.ippg.net).

On the second day of the itinerary, we host a Pre-Trip short Meeting at the hotel by your trek guide, The primary purpose of the meeting is to provide brief information on your trek and equipments hiring if needed.

Please bring the following thing on the meeting-

  • Passport.
  • Two copies of Passport size photos each.
  • Travel Insurance Policy.

Natraj Trekking is the one of the leading and oldest trekking agency in Nepal since 1967. We organize Tibet, Bhutan & India tour as well. We excel in this field because we genuinely love what we do and are committed to providing you with the best services as we commit you.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

We strongly recommend that you check your government’s travel advisory for up-to-date information and advice about your destination: safety and security, entry requirements, health, local laws and customs, including advice re: the legality of and local attitudes towards same-sex relationships.

TIPS

Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ for good service. Tips do not form part of the wages of your guides, porters and trek crew but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. Normally the tips are given at the end of the trek and this is best done as a group. Most groups will give the tips with a bit of ceremony (or sometimes a party) on the last evening, to mark the end of the trip. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work.
