Tibet is often referred to as the “Roof of the World”. It is a jewel in the Himalayas and a place filled with hope and secrets. With average heights of over 4,000 m, it is also the world’s highest plateau. Its wild and overwhelming landscape will cause you to be weak in the knees.Tibet has some of the world’s tallest mountains, with several of them making the top ten lists. Mount Everest, at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft), is the highest mountain on earth, located on the border with Nepal. Several major rivers have their source in the Tibetan Plateau. These include Yangtze, Yellow River, Indus River, Mekong, Ganges, Salween and the Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra River). The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, is among the deepest and longest canyons in the world.
The strong heating of the earth surface during the summer months and the freezing in winter produces clear seasonal variations in atmospheric circulation and enhances the role of local centers of atmospheric activity, so the climate and weather in Tibet is very changeable.
